Hello TypeReview. You have very nice and informative content. How did you learn how to make and critique fonts? As an aspiring font designer, I would like to learn more as to why and how a font is too thick, too thin, the joints need adjusting, etc. Do you recommend a book?

I learned about typography design in the postgraduate course in typography (now it’s a Master in Typography) at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentine. I recommend three books which I have served me a lot:
– The Stroke : Theory of Writing ( Gerrit Noordzij )
– Designing type (Karen Cheng ) and
– The Elements of Typographic Style ( Robert Bringhurst ).
I also recommend that compare different fonts, look at many typefaces and compare detailed decisions taken by the designers, will help a lot; on the website of OERT (Open Educational Resources for Typography – http://www.oert.org) you find excellent quality material that can help you.
